The Committee considered the correspondence from the petitioner and agreed to:

 

·         Forward the petitioner’s request to the Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Infrastructure and ask if he is prepared to consider calling a public inquiry into the events surrounding the development of the Coal Exchange; and

·         write to the Leader of Cardiff Council to seek his response to comments received about the accuracy of his correspondence with the Committee.

·         write to the Minister for Economy, Transport and Science enclosing the additional comments and ask her for an update of her current understanding of the position and whether she believes that Cardiff County Council are using their powers in an appropriate way; and in doing so

·         copy the letter to Ken Skates AM, Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism and Stephen Doughty MP, with a request that they update the Committee on their knowledge of the latest position.

·         Write to the Minister for Economy, Science and Transport asking her:

o   to let the Committee see the results of the initial feasibility study as soon as they are available; and

o   for further information on the process undertaken to select the contractors used for the feasibility study and in particular why CADW contractors are not being used;

 

·         Visit the exterior of the Building, with the Petitioner so that Members can gain a better appreciation of the state of the Building.

·         the leader of Cardiff Council asking for an update on the latest position and asking for further information on the liquidators if available, to allow the Committee to pursue arranging a visit to the building;

·         the Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism asking what the Welsh Government role is in the light of the holding company’s liquidation; and

·         Stephen Doughty MP, copying in Vaughan Gething AM, to draw the petition to his attention and ask about progress on his campaign.

  1. The Minister for Culture and Sport seeking his views and clarification of the use of the Section 78 powers that were cited by the petitioner;
  2. Cadw seeking clarification of the issues raised in the petition from their perspective, including how they ensure that protections for buildings of this nature are adhered to;
  3. The Chief Executive and Leader of Cardiff Council asking:

Ø  for their views on the issues raised by the petition;

Ø  for further information about their plans for the Coal Exchange building and the reasons for taking their chosen approach; and

Ø  whether the Committee could visit the building.
