Biography

Deputy Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing

Key interests and achievements

Lynne is passionate about suicide prevention and children and young people’s mental health. She was Chair of the Senedd’s Children, Young People and Education Committee in the Fifth Senedd.

Personal history

Lynne Neagle was born in Merthyr Tydfil in 1968 and was educated at Cyfarthfa High School, then Reading University, where she studied French and Italian. She is married to Huw Lewis, Assembly Member for Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney until the Fifth Assembly, and has two sons.

Professional background

Before her election to the then National Assembly in 1999, Lynne held a number of posts within the voluntary sector in Wales, working for organisations such as Shelter Cymru, Mind and the CAB. She was Carers Development Officer with Voluntary Action Cardiff and also worked as a researcher for Glenys Kinnock MEP

Political history

Lynne was a long-serving chair of the Labour Group in the Assembly until 2008. Her political interests include health, housing, social services, Europe and the future of the valleys in south Wales. In the Fifth Senedd, Lynne was chair of the Senedd’s Children, Young People and Education Committee.
