Personal history

 

David Rees is from Aberavon and was educated in local primary and comprehensive schools. He now lives in Cwmafan, Port Talbot with his wife. They have two adult daughters, both of whom attended Welsh medium schools, and one grand-daughter. David has an honours degree in Engineering from Cardiff University, as well as a post-graduate teaching qualification and a master’s degree in Computer Science.

 

Professional history

 

David started his education career as a teacher of mathematics in Cynffig Comprehensive School, Kenfig Hill, before becoming a lecturer in computing at Afan College. He then moved into higher education as a senior lecturer and more recently was Assistant Dean of Faculty at Swansea Metropolitan University where he is studying for a doctorate.

 

David has been a governor at Swansea Institute of HE and at Ysgol Gyfun Ystalfera.

 

He is a member of the British Computer Society and a Chartered Engineer.

 

Political history

 

David was elected to the National Assembly for Wales for the first time in 2011. Since joining the Labour party in 1982 he has held a number of positions within the party in Wales, as well as in his trade union. He is currently a member of Labour’s Welsh Executive Committee and the Welsh Policy Forum.

 

David was the Labour Party’s candidate for Brecon and Radnorshire in 2003 and a list candidate for South Wales West in 2007.

 

His political interests include manufacturing, economic development, tourism in the south Wales valleys, education, health and local government.

 

Affiliations

David is a member of Unite the Union and was previously a member of the Universities and Colleges Union.
