Elaine and I have been married for over 30 years and have three children, two of whom are grown up and one is in school. Over the years we’ve also fostered a number of children. Our other family member is Pebbles; she’s a Bisson Frise and a real character.
I was brought up in Reading and moved to Wales to study law at Cardiff University in 1973. I love Wales and it’s where I met Elaine, so I’ve lived here ever since. My father was a refugee from Ukraine after the war and he taught me Ukrainian, which I speak fluently. I’m currently learning Welsh and whilst I’m really enjoying it, I’m still some way from being fluent in three languages!
From 1977 to 1979, I was President of the National Union of Students (Wales) and shortly after, from 1981 to 1989 I was a member of South Glamorgan County Council.
Before being elected to serve the people of Pontypridd in 2011 I was a partner at Trade Union solicitors Thompsons, where I regularly represented people Pontypridd and across Rhondda Cynon Taf. My casework took me to the collieries at Nantgarw and Cwm, South Wales Forgemasters and Brown Lenox amongst others, and as a result I have lived through the many changes in the constituency over the years.
After qualifying in 1980, I specialised in spinal and head injuries and corporate manslaughter. I’m a visiting fellow of the University of South Wales in Treforest. I’ve also lectured widely across Wales, the UK and internationally in the field of health and safety and law reform.
My primary role in the Assembly is to represent residents, groups and organisations within the Pontypridd constituency. In addition I sit on three Assembly Committees and a number of cross-party groups (see below). Since 2012 I’ve represented the Welsh Government on the European Union Committee of the Regions.
I was a founder member of the Bevan Foundation and a former trustee of the Welsh Refugee Council. I am Vice President of the Brynsadler Community Trust in Pontyclun and a Trustee of Beddau-based youth counseling charity Eye-to-eye. I’m also a member of Welsh Labour Grassroots, the Co-operative Party, GMB and the Musicians Union.
